Communication between Cultures is a general course for the freshmen majored in Financial Engineering. It aims to cultivate students’ cross-cultural awareness and improve the intercultural communication skills in specific context. This course focuses on the importance of culture in our everyday lives, and the ways in which culture interrelates with and effects communication processes. We live in an era of rapid globalization in which being able to communicate across cultures is imperative to our ability to function in a diverse workplace, city, and world. In this course you are expected to understand the basic concepts about culture and communication, define the crucial cultural value orientations and master their characteristics. Based on this solid knowledge, you are required to apply the relevant theories to analyse the cultural conflict in different context, explore the roots and formulate practical solutions to solve the problem. During the learning process, you have to make the best of your innovation and critical thinking, actively get involved in the class workshop including reading assignments, case study, group discussions and oral presentations. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to conduct intercultural and intra-cultural communication in appropriate verbal or nonverbal ways and develop a rational cultural tolerance and confidence.
