The principle aim of this course is to improve specific English for academic purposes for study abroad and assist students engaged in academic study conducted entirely or in English with the specific needs of Chinese-speaking learners of English in mind. While there is a strong focus on input and output texts there is also a strong focus on grammar, vocabulary and study skills throughout the course. The teaching and learning focuses on topical themes across academic disciplines and on language commonly used in the academic setting. While the EAP and required skills are being delivered topically, it covers key facts, concepts and practice, thereby giving students a flying start for when they encounter the same language, skills and production that are required in their faculty work. Finally, it presents the skills required to take part in seminars and tutorials and to produce level one assignments. There is a significant amount of independent study required and students are expected to complete both classwork and assigned self-study.
