English for Academic Purposes 3A MODULE TITLE: English for Academic Purposes 3A MODULE CODE: LLB3311 CREDIT POINTS: 6 TEACHING HOURS: up to 96 PREREQUISITE: LLB2211 AIMS The principle aim of this course is to improve specific English for academic purposes for study abroad and assist students engaged in academic study conducted entirely or in English with the specific needs of Chinese-speaking learners of English in mind. While there is a strong focus on input and output texts there is also a strong focus on grammar, vocabulary and study skills throughout the course. The teaching and learning focuses on topical themes across academic disciplines and on language commonly used in the academic setting. While the EAP and required skills are being delivered topically, it covers key facts, concepts and practice, thereby giving students a flying start for when they encounter the same language, skills and production that are required in their faculty work. Finally, it presents the skills required to take part in seminars and tutorials and to produce level one assignments. There is a significant amount of independent study required and students are expected to complete both classwork and assigned self-study. REQUIRED RESOURCES Textbook Skillful 3, L. This is a form of educational assessment that evaluates a student's progress throughout the course and is not a midterm/final examination approach. This approach allows tracking of progress and has a chance of offering students more support, guidance, and opportunities to improve during the programme. Students who fail to obtain a passing grade in any assessment are supported and given the chance to retake the assessment during the programme, to give them every opportunity to improve and pass the course.
